International Health Insurance vs Travel Insurance: Which Do You Actually Need?
One of the most common questions we get at RiskVector is: "Do I need international health insurance or travel insurance?" The answer depends on how you travel, where you live, and what kind of medical care you might need. These two products look similar but serve fundamentally different purposes.
The Core Difference
**Travel insurance** covers unexpected emergencies during short-term trips. It's designed for tourists and assumes you have a permanent residence and healthcare system somewhere.
**International health insurance** provides comprehensive medical coverage regardless of where you are in the world. It's designed for expats, digital nomads, and long-term travelers who don't have access to a national healthcare system.
Quick Comparison
|---------|-----------------|-------------------------------|
Who Needs Travel Insurance?
Travel insurance is right for you if:
Typical Cost: €30-€200 per trip
For a 2-week trip to Southeast Asia, expect to pay €40-€80 for adequate coverage. For a 3-month trip, €150-€300 is typical.
Who Needs International Health Insurance?
International health insurance is right for you if:
Typical Cost: €1,500-€8,000 per year
Pricing varies enormously based on:
Coverage Deep Dive
Emergency Medical Treatment
**Travel Insurance:** Covers emergency room visits, hospitalization, and surgery for unforeseen illness or injury. Usually capped at €50,000-€1,000,000.
**International Health Insurance:** Covers all medical treatment including planned surgeries, ongoing treatment for chronic conditions, and outpatient visits. Coverage limits are typically much higher or unlimited.
Pre-existing Conditions
**Travel Insurance:** Almost always excluded. If you have diabetes and need medical care while traveling because of it, your claim will likely be denied.
**International Health Insurance:** Often covered after a medical questionnaire and underwriting process. Some plans have waiting periods of 12-24 months for pre-existing conditions.
Maternity and Childbirth
**Travel Insurance:** Pregnancy complications covered up to a certain week (usually 26-28). Normal childbirth is never covered.
**International Health Insurance:** Full maternity coverage after a 10-12 month waiting period. Includes prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care. Newborn coverage can be added.
Mental Health
**Travel Insurance:** Generally not covered.
**International Health Insurance:** Many plans include mental health coverage (therapy, psychiatric care, substance abuse treatment) after waiting periods.
The Gray Area: Digital Nomads and Long-Term Travelers
If you're a digital nomad spending 3-6 months in each country, the decision is harder. You might benefit from a **hybrid approach**:

Bottom Line
If you're a casual traveler taking 1-3 vacations per year, buy travel insurance. If you're living abroad or traveling indefinitely, international health insurance is the smarter long-term investment. For digital nomads in between, a combination of both may provide the best protection.
