Is Bangladesh Safe for Tourists? Dhaka & Sundarbans 2026 Guide
Bangladesh is one of South Asia's least visited countries, which makes it an intriguing destination for adventurous travelers. From the world's largest mangrove forest (the Sundarbans) to the tea hills of Sylhet and the energy of Dhaka, Bangladesh offers raw, authentic experiences. But it also presents significant challenges.
Political Situation (2026)
Following the August 2024 revolution that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after 15 years in power, Bangladesh has been in a political transition. An interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has maintained relative stability through 2025-2026, but political tensions remain.
Elections are expected in late 2026 or early 2027. Political violence and hartals (general strikes) can occur with little warning, particularly in the lead-up to elections. Monitor local news and avoid political gatherings.
Dhaka Safety
Dhaka is one of the world's most densely populated cities. It is intense, noisy, and overwhelming — but generally safe from violent crime.
Crime
Violent crime against foreigners is rare in Dhaka. However:
Dhaka's Gulshan and Banani neighborhoods, where most embassies and international hotels are located, are the safest areas. Security is heavy and crime is minimal.
Traffic
Dhaka has some of the worst traffic congestion in the world. A 10-kilometer journey can take 90 minutes. The traffic itself is not particularly dangerous (speeds are very low), but air pollution from vehicles is a serious health concern.
Crossing the street requires practice: move slowly, make eye contact with drivers, and do not retreat once you start crossing.
Health Risks
Health is the biggest concern for travelers in Bangladesh.
Water and Food Safety
Mosquito-Borne Diseases
Air Pollution
Dhaka's air quality is hazardous from November to March. PM2.5 levels regularly exceed 200 micrograms per cubic meter (WHO guideline is 15). Wear an N95 mask outdoors during this period. People with respiratory conditions should reconsider visiting during winter months.
Medical Care
United Hospital and Evercare Hospital in Dhaka offer reasonable care for standard issues. For serious conditions, evacuation to Bangkok or Singapore is necessary. Ensure travel insurance covers medical evacuation.
Sundarbans Safety
The Sundarbans, a UNESCO World Heritage mangrove forest shared with India, is home to the Bengal tiger. Visiting requires a permit and a licensed guide.
Key Risks
How to Visit Safely
Book through a reputable operator based in Mongla or Khulna. Tours are typically 3-7 days on converted boat cruisers. Ensure the operator provides life jackets and has communication equipment. The best season is November to February.
Chittagong Hill Tracts
The Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) in southeastern Bangladesh are culturally fascinating but have a history of ethnic conflict. The 1997 Peace Accord ended major hostilities, but tensions remain. Foreigners need a special permit to enter the CHT. Bandarban is the most accessible and safest area for tourists.

Verdict
Bangladesh is safe from violent crime but challenging from health and infrastructure perspectives. Dhaka is manageable with patience. The Sundarbans and Sylhet offer extraordinary experiences for well-prepared travelers. The biggest risks are not crime but illness, pollution, and political instability. Go with realistic expectations, comprehensive insurance, and patience.
